We all want young driver fatalities to decrease. A survey completed by researchers from the California Department of Motor Vehicles analyzed statistics which validated facts that there have been fewer fatal crashes among 16-year olds recently. This study links this reduction to a number of stronger driver license laws that states have enacted in recent years. That's worth celebrating!
But unfortunately...the article goes on share it's not all good news. Another reason attributing to the decline is that these stricter license requirements for 16 years olds, are often creating incentives for young drivers to just wait until they are 18 years old to get their license. So now they are a bit older and hopefully wiser, but in reality they have still not gained any experience behind the wheel.
The summary point, is really worth emphasizing again..."The results show there's a need for strategies for the novice driver at any age".
Being an active participant in your young driver's learning is HUGE. Helping them develop solid driving skills, and establishing appropriate boundaries to curb behavior that can become dangerous can keep your driver safe...as well as the rest of us sharing the road.
